FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Ten Years to Closure: Shanta Paloma’s Retro Rock Album Debut
Holyoke, Massachusetts, February 9, 2013
It has been a long time coming, but Shanta Paloma has released her debut album – a selection of original songs written in the past ten years from miles of soul searching! The eleven tracks, each with a lot of their own character, blend SP’s gypsy soul into her rock n’ roll grit in this self-titled Indie Rock album that has been described as “Classic!” and “Fun!” The CD Release Party will be held at The Elevens in Northampton, MA, on Thursday April 11th 2013 with an all-star band lineup and the artwork of a live painter. Stay Tuned!
Guitarist from the band, YokoDevin writes, “Shanta is a great original rock artist with a style all her own. Fantastic lyricist with catchy pop-like hooks.” While there is a unifying soulful grime in her vocals, the album includes diverse elements: a bossa nova groove, some tribal inspired rhythms, a funk guitar, a swing walking bass line, a lil’ folk crunchiness, bluesy note bends, spoonfuls of distorted guitars, a hint of hip hop spoken word, and a SPrinkle of sweet, hopeful playfulness. All around, though, the sound is edgy and passionate. Experimental Jazz musician, Anthony Braxton, once told her, “Your music is very clear and radiant in every way! It is fresh!”
An anonymous blogger writes, “Simply Stated: She emits a musical beauty about her. Seriously- Shanta’s a walking song. Highs, lows, but it all comes full circle with a melody you can hold onto.”
Shanta has a strong stage presence and a sassy salt of the earth personality. Her dark hair and olive skin make one wonder where she is from; and she’ll tell you that her name has nothing to do with her place of origin. It almost seems as though she could be from anywhere. In a way, she is. She is from everywhere. She pulls a bit of everywhere into her music.
The songstress originally hails from California but was raised in France, India and Turkey. Living in a family that was constantly moving and changing life-styles, Shanta developed a deep appreciation for difference and diversity; and then an even deeper appreciation for the things that bind mankind. Music, the universal language, started off as an anchor for a lonely traveling child and developed into her north star. She has won several awards and honors over the last decade as well as been featured in soundtracks and compilation albums.
This long-awaited release is wrapped in saucy rockabilly-style painting of SP (Art by Matto) suggesting the Sexy/Playful, Soulful/Philosophical and the Straightforward/Profound nature of her music. The look of the album, coupled with a decade of inspiration, conjure up the term Retro Rock to describe this piece of work. Pick up a copy of your own!
Shanta is available for interviews, performances and appearances. Finding Shanta Paloma is as easy as googling her name.
BLOG Thursday, Nov 15, 2012 @ 8:11 PM : Debut Album Coming Soon!!!
Sooooo… this has been a long time coming. I’ve recorded several demos, the best of them being in at Omni Sound and Sound Emporium in Nashville; and Stillwork in Holyoke. BUT, now I’m going to be a reeeeaaaal musician with her very own full length album! This album is like closure to me. I’m including the best songs from the past decade of my life! The oldest song on the track list is “Like A LIttle Girl (Yadadedai)” which I wrote when I was 20 years old, working for Greenpeace in New York City. It took me a while to even acknowledge it as a song because I thought it was way too simple. But a few years back, I played it for a friend who loved it and since then I’ve included it in sets. It became one of the more popular ones. Go figure. That song is only slightly older than Wake Up, Bittersweet Love which was written when I was 21 years old. Whew! The rest of the tracks were written in the next nine years until the very last one which is not even a year old….It is filled with passionate songs, philospohical songs, angry songs, sweet songs, sexy songs, playful songs and melancholy songs. The full spectrum, I suppose. Well, in any case… it is on it’s way to you!
BLOG Saturday, Jan 26, 2013 @ 3:01 PM: Painful/Beautiful
So my debut album is here and Oh! what a relief. It looks good. It wasn’t as glossy as I thought it would be considering other things I’ve seen printed at Discmakers, but I like it. It looks retro…. The album was described as “classic” by two unrelated listeners at very different times. So I guess it looks and sounds Classic. I can go with that! Anyways, it is available at www.CDbaby.com/CD/ShantaPaloma and at a gazillion other online distribution sites. You know what I discovered? If you google “Shanta Paloma”, the first 6 pages are exclusively about me… and then there is more, beyond. I have mixed feelings about this. I want to spend my time making music in various ways and in order to sustain that, I have to be a business. With the business comes promotion and marketing. I don’t mind the work, but it becomes harder to sure-footedly know I am walking in purity and with integrity. Professional/Personal is the line I delicately watch….. I guess that with the A&R comes exposure. It’s like the ray of sunshine that is peering through the blinds when you wake up – painful and beautiful at the same time.
